                The Villages of Newton

 

Newton is a diverse community comprised of 13 villages, each with its own distinctive personality,                     character, neighborhood  feeling, and architecture

 

 Auburndale

53_vista_512Aubundale lies along the banks of the Charles River, and shares a border with Waltham. There is a station for the commuter train,as well as the MBTA. The village center is home to many quaint shops and the Turtle Lane Playhouse. Auburndale is also known for being the home of Lasell College and Lasell Village(a senior citizen community). Wares cove is site of the summer Thursday afternoon Children;s Performance. Auburndale has an active Community Association.

 Chestnut Hill

new_hammond_512_02Chestnut Hill shares the name with the neighboring area in Brookline. The village is a mix of residential and commercial including Boston College.The area encompasses Hammond Pond Parkway, Hammond Street, Boylston St. until Oak Hill, Beacon St. part of Commonwealth Ave., and the two MBTA stations: one near The Chestnut Hill Post Office, and the  second at Boston College and Lake Street.

Some of the areas of Chestnut Hill include the oldest, most impressive houses in Newton. Large Victorians, Georgian Colonials, Colonial Revivals, and Mansions can be seen in  this village. The two oldest homes in Newton are on Old Orchard Road.

 Newton Centre

swimming_from_website_576_01Newton Centre is the biggest and most centrally located village. Formed by the intersection of Beacon, Langley, and Centre Streets, the core of Newton Centre hosts a variety of ethnic restaurants, terrific shopping, as well as,an MBTA station. Beyond it's commercial district, Newton Centre includes Crystal Lake, a deep glacial pond in a sylvan setting. Across from Newton City Hall is the award winning Newton Free Library, which offers lectures, films, exhibitions and an excellent art gallery.

 Newton Corner

newton_corner_from_website_252 Newton Corner-bounded by the Charles River, Watertown and Brighton-is one of the city's oldest sections. Today the community is chopped in half by the Mass. Pike.which brought easy access to Boston.

The Jackson Homestead, built in 1809 is now the city's museum. The federal style house(picture) was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

 Newton Highlands

newton_highlands_from_website_512_01Accessible by MBTA, Newton Highlands is a wealth of charming Victorians houses, coffee houses, Baker's Best delectables, beauty parlors, restaurants and other great finds. The areas main commericial district is along Lincoln Street. The second commercial second stretches into Needham Street that eventually turns into Upper Falls.

Lower Falls is bordered by Wellesley, Route 128, and Waban. The Neighborhood Association is active, but had been much  stronger before the elementary school was closed, due to declining enrollment.

 Newton Upper Falls

Newton Upper Falls-south of Route 9 and bordering Wellesley-is the smallest Village. It is one of the six  founding villages of Newton. Much of Upper Falls is now a local historic district containing more than 150 structures, many of which look much like they did in the 19th century.

Echo Bridge,built in 1876, is a 500 long granite bridge with the highest stone arches in the world

 Newtonville

newtonville_from_website_750_01Newtonville is divided by the Mass.Turnpike and is a stop for the commuter train to Boston. It is home to the sprawling Newton North High School and The New Art Center. The Commercial district is located mainly on Washington and Walnut Street with a wide range of shops including a large Star Market. 

The village contains a fine collection of well-preserced Victorian architecture, ranging from the austere Greek Revival of the 1840s through the richly ornamented Colonial Revival of the 1890s.

 Nonantum 
nonantum_512_01At the heart of Nonantum laid Silver Lake.  The pond  owed its existence to the removal of several layers of  peat by Irish immigrants who used it for fuel. Today the lake is no longer in existence. Longtime residents still refer to Nonantum as "The Lake"; referring to the former Silver Lake. The northern edge of the city bordered by Waltham and Watertown has tiny residential streets housing one and two family homes with fancy brickwork and mosaic address plaques.

 Oak Hill Park

oak_hill_park_450At the end of World War II, when there was a housing shortage for the veterans, the City of Newton built 412 houses, a shopping center, and a school for its new veterans. The new neighborhood was called Oak Hill Park. Each home included three bedrooms, one bath and no basement. In 1950 it became incorporated as a village into the City of Newton.

Today many of the houses have second floors or have been demolished to be replaced by larger homes. The elementary school closed in 1977 due to declining enrollment and the business district has become apartments for the elderly.

 Thompsonville

This village is little known outside the residents. Its boundaries seem to overlap those of Chestnut Hill and Newton Centre. A majority of residents in the village refer to their address as Chestnut Hill or Newton Centre rather than Thompsonville.The Neighborhood Association seems to keep the village alive.

 Waban

Waban is one of the most accessible villages in Newton.In less than 1/2 mile you can reach Route 128. In less than 1 1/2 miles you are on the Mass. Pike. In the center of the village is the MBTA station and many shops. Two blocks away is the highly regarded elementary school.

Down the street is the Newton and Wellesley Hospital Waban has a very active Neighborhood  Organization. There is also a private tennis and  swim club, for the residents of Waban only, membership is required.

 West Newton

                                                             West Newton is home to the second exit in Newton off the Mass. Turnpike coming from Boston. It it also a station stop for the commuter train to Boston. Bordering Wellesley and Waban, West Newton is also divided by the Turnpike. The commercial district is mainly on Washington Street with a variety of ethnic foods, Trader Joe's, and The West Newton Movie House.

West Newton has the finest selection of Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Colonial  Revival homes in the city. Many homes have  been magnificently restored.

The Newton Public Schools are organized in an Elementary School  K-5, Middle School 6-8, and High School 9-12 arrangement with a projected enrollment of 11,237 students for FY06. There are fifteen elementary schools, with a projected average size of 333, four middle schools averaging  633, and two senior high schools  averaging 1,858. The pupil-teacher ratio goals as established by the School Committee are: elementary schools 23:1; middle schools 14.5:1; and high schools 16.1:1.
