Some areas of Chestnut Hill have the oldest, most impressive houses in Newton. Large Victorians, Georgian Colonials, Colonial Revivals and Mansions can be seen in this village. The two oldest homes in Newton are on Old Orchard Road. A large section of Chestnut Hill has been declared an Historic  District.

        Nonantum
nonantum_512_03At the heart of Nonantum laid Silver Lake. The pond owed its existence to the removal of several layers of peat by Irish immigrants who used it for fuel. The lake was filled in and built over from the 1930s into the 1950s. Longtime residents still refer to Nonantum as "The Lake", referring to the former Silver lake.

Nonantum is on the northern edge of the City bordered by Waltham and Watertown. It has small streets housing one and two-family home. The commercial area has a larger than average number of Italian restaurants.

         Oak Hill Park
oak_hill_park_450_01At the end of World War II, when there was a housing shortage for the veterans, the City of Newton built 412 houses, a shopping center and a school for its new veterans. The new neighborhood was called "Oak Hill Park". Each home included three bedrooms, one bath and no basement. It become incorporated as a village into the City of Newton in 1950.

Today many of the houses have second floors or have been demolished to be replaced by larger homes. The elementary school closed in 1977 due to declining enrollment and the business district has become apartments for the elderly.

This village is little known outside the residents. Its boundaries seem to overlap those of Chestnut Hill and Newton Centre. There is no zip code for Thompsonville so the residents use the Newton Centre or Chestnut Hill zip codes. The neighborhood Association seems to keep the village alive.
